"Between 1861 and 1865, Americans made war on each other and killed each other in great numbers, if only to become the kind of country that could no longer conceive how that was possible."
I am brought to tears by the indescribably powerful images and words of the first 5 minutes of Ken Burns' 6 part masterpiece, The Civil War.
Back in high school I remember my mom binge watching this great series over and over like it was Pride and Prejudice on the BBC. Now I understand why! as I furiously hit the back button to re-watch how Ken Burns sequences old photographs and film that speak to the very soul of America across time and space.
The violence and tragedy of war that Ken Burns centers in the very first seconds of the film immediately summon up the wars and suffering happening all over the world today.
Do these wars have the same clarity of purpose that the Union had in the Civil War? Do these wars have the righteous purpose of freedom and equality for all people?
