The Evolution of BLM
Black Lives Matter
HOW BLACK LIVES MATTER BECAME A MOVEMENT

The hashtag #BlackLivesMatter was tweeted for the first time on July 13, 2013 in response to the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the murder case of a Black 17 year-old Trayvon Martin. Since 2013, the Black Lives Matter movement was built by three Black women named Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi. Throughout the last seven years, the BLM movement has mobilized, inspired, and unified millions of people around the world to fight for equity and justice.

WHAT IS THE BLACK LIVES MATTER MOVEMENT?
Black Lives Matter is a movement to dismantle systemic racism, discrimination, and oppression. This includes criminal justice systems, housing, education, and more.

BLACK LIVES MATTER...
• is the largest Black-led protest since the 1960s
• builds social, economic, and political power for all Black people
• affirms Black humanity and creates space for Black
empowerment
• is the collective action of Black liberation organizations around
the world
• is "fighting for a fundamental reordering of society wherein
Black lives are free from systemic dehumanization" - Frank L
Roberts

WHAT DOES IT MEAN WHEN PEOPLE SAY BLACK LIVES MATTER?
Black Lives Matter #1 acknowledges that Black people are disproportionately affected by systems of inequality and oppression and #2 works towards building more just and equitable systems.

COMMITTING TO BLACK LIVES MATTER IS...
• Working towards change that creates social, political, and economic
power for Black people
• Changing unjust systems in criminal justice including courts, police,
jails, and prisons
• Making housing, education, and healthcare more equitable
• Ending police violence and brutality
• Fighting against state sanctioned violence against Black communities
• Building and organizing local, national, and global efforts for Black
empowerment

HOW DID BLACK LIVES MATTER COME TO BE?
In 2013, Alicia Garza, a domestic worker rights organizer, Patrisse Cullors, an anti-police violence organizer, and Opal Tometi, an immigrant rights organizer came together and founded the Black Lives Matter Movement after the acquittal of the man who murdered Trayvon Martin. Black Lives Matter became a call for solidarity and to action every time a Black person was killed, and the movement gained traction on social media through the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter.

WHY IS BLACK LIVES MATTER SIGNIFICANT?
Black Lives Matter was the first movement to use social media to mobilize people on a global level. The hashtag #BlackLivesMatter became both a platform and an organizing tool by using social media to generate action offline.

BLM ORGANIZERS HAVE GAINED IMMENSE SOCIAL AND POLITICAL INFLUENCE:
• Influenced national legislation
• Sought justice for victims of police violence and unjust
criminal justice systems
• Improved housing, healthcare, and education
• Helped restructure the Democratic policy platform
• Ousted corrupt politicians

HOW HAS BLACK LIVES MATTER SHAPED OTHER MOVEMENTS?
• BLM is a product of previous social movements and has developed the framework for more social movements
• Movements like #MeToo, #NeverAgain, or #TimesUp were supported by the groundwork that #BLM laid
• BLM has inspired other social movements to use social media mobilization
• The language, rhetoric, and framework of abolitionism as used by congressional Democrats to call for #AbolishICE came from BLM organizers and activists
• BLM has changed the way people think and talk about police violence and modern policing in general
