May is Asian-American Pacific Islander Heritage Month
AAPI Heritage Month
Importance of May

WHAT IS AAPI HERITAGE MONTH?
May is designated as Asian-American Pacific Islander Heritage Month and is meant to celebrate the contributions that generations of Asian-American Pacific Islander's have made to history, society, and culture in
the United States. While the Asian American and Pacific Islander Community deserves to be celebrated every month and celebration should not be limited to just one month, May is a time to further recognize and appreciate the API community, which does not always get the recognition it deserves in the US.

THE HISTORY OF AAPI HERITAGE MONTH
AAPI Heritage Month began as a one week observance but was later extended to the entire month of May after Congress unanimously passed a bill in 1990 which was signed by former President George H.W. Bush. Then, in 1992 a new bill was passed that designated API heritage month as an annual observance. May is significant to the API community because on May 7, 1843 the first Japanese immigrant arrived in the
United States. Furthermore, more than 2 decades later, on May 10, 1869 the first transcontinental railroad was completed which more than 20,000 workers of Chinese descent participated in.

HOW TO OBSERVE
Educate yourself and actively work to call out and dismantle racist stereotypes and micro-aggressions against the API community.
Understand that AAPI is a broad term that encompasses a plethora of different identities.
Stay educated about issues currently facing the community such as the continuity of COVID-19 related hate crimes as well as issues that have
impacted the community for generations.
Consume media that represents and accurately represents members of the API community!
