The Supremes play their final concert with Diana Ross
Music

The Supremes gave their final concert with Diana Ross on January 14th, 1970.

Originally founded as The Primettes, the Detroit vocal group of high school students was determined to perform.

Diana Ross asked old neighbor Smokey Robinson to help "the girls" get an audition with Berry Gordy, who feared their young age and inexperience wouldn't allow them to become full-fledged recording artists.

They went to Hitsville U.S.A. every day after school, and began making appearances on tracks by other artists. In 1961, Berry Gordy agreed to give them a contract.

By this point, The Supremes had become a trio. They reached international acclaim by the mid-1960s, rivaling The Beatles on the Billboard charts.

The group underwent changes, and after being renamed to "Diana Ross & the Supremes", reverted back to its original name of The Supremes, following Ross' departure. The Supremes disbanded in 1977.
