Gender Stereotypes
Gender Roles and Society

Gender Roles
Gender roles in society are established expectations that present how to act, speak and present ourselves in general based on our assigned sex. For instance, women are expected to be polite, graceful and caring. Men on the other hand, are expected to be fierce, strong, and audacious.

Gender Stereotypes and Sexism
A stereotype is an overgeneralized bias or prejudice about a person or a group; it is not always accurate. Basic types of gender stereotypes are women are assumed to be sensitive while men are self confident and bold. Women are expected to have short hair and have a thin figure meanwhile men should be muscular and tall. Flight attendants or nurses are considered to be jobs for women meanwhile doctors and engineers ought to be men. Women are expected to take care of the kids and the house, while men have to financially provide for their families.

Gender stereotypes are harmful because they are used as a guideline concerning the behavior of people of a certain sex, restricting them to develop their own attributes and skills, as well as preventing them from making their own life decisions.
