There is a direct link between the Powell memo -- see storypost link below -- and the current brand of right-wing extremism.
What the American proto-fascists understood and understand better than anyone else, is how to shape the evolution of culture through 21st century communication technologies. It's likely that if the internet had existed in the 1930s, Goebbels and Hitler would have stuck around longer.
Note that this graphic is already well outdated, having been published March 6th, 2025. It would be crucial to see an updated version to see the evolution because so many non-fascist voices have appeared since the second Grump administration started rapidly torpedoing American democracy along with democracy around the world.
It's impossible to ignore that once again, there are *a lot* of cisgender, allegedly heterosexual, white men at the head of the cultural hijack. It doesn't really matter whether they're intentionally embracing fascist ideals or being useful idiots. Just like with Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany, by the time the majority of people realize the consequences of letting the lunatics take over, it's already way, way, way too late to avoid hundreds of millions of lives being destroyed one way or another.
There really aren't two sides to every argument. From the standpoint of basic humanity, it is indefensible to support any extremism. But the truth is that right now, who is in power? Do you see communists in power anywhere? No. Do you see fascists in power anywhere? Yes, starting with the USA.
