Dominican Independence Day

The Dominican War of Independence gave the Dominican Republic its independence from Haiti in 1844. Before the war, the entire island of Hispaniola had been under Haitian rule for 22 years when Haiti occupied the new independent state called Haiti Español in 1822 After the efforts made by Dominican patriots to make the country independent from the Haitian dominion, a series of battles ensued that consolidated it (1844-1856). The Haitians made incessant attacks to re-dominate the newly created Republic, but with failed results.
