Happy Birthday Salvador Dali!

Having held his first exhibition (where he showed charcoal drawings) in his hometown of Figueres in 1919, Dali attended the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. He experimented with Cubism and Dada, traveled to Paris where he met his idol Pablo Picasso (who'd heard about Dalí from their mutual friend Joan Miró), and starting in 1929, fully immersed himself in surrealism in various media.

Dalí became almost as famous for his personality as for his artistic output. He was expelled from the Surrealist group when he contended he was apolitical, refusing to formally denounce any of the rising movements in Europe, during the Spanish Civil War and World War II.

Naturally, this did not stop Dalí from becoming one of the most prolific surrealist artists.
