William Shakespeare was presumably born on April 23rd in 1564
Happy Birthday Shakespeare!
William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in England, presumably on April 23rd in 1564. He also died on April 23rd, in 1616.
Shakespeare is widely considered to be the greatest writer of all time in the English language, and has been nicknamed "the bard". Known as an actor and dramatist (with 37 plays to his name), Shakespeare also wrote over 150 sonnets. Master of the neologism, he invented more than 1,700 words!
Active from 1589 to 1613, he first wrote comedies ("A Midsummer Night's Dream", "Twelfth Night") and histories ("Henry IV" parts 1 and 2, "Henry V"), then delved into tragedies ("Romeo and Juliet", "Julius Caesar") around 1608, and moved on to tragicomedies ("The Tempest").
Shakespeare's legacy in theater, literature, poetry, and English are unparalleled to this day.
