St. Patrick's Day

March 17th marks St. Patrick's Day, celebrated in honor of St. Patrick (born Maewyn Succat), patron saint of Ireland.

The legend goes that sixteen-year old Patrick was kidnapped from his home in Roman Britain by Irish pirates. He was brought to Ireland where he was enslaved and held captive for six years, and it is during this time that he became spiritually engaged and converted to Christianity.

Hearing a voice that told him he would soon return home, Patrick was able to flee his master, convince a captain to take him aboard his ship and return home. Upon his return, Patrick dedicated himself to the teachings of Christianity, and went back to Ireland to follow priesthood studies. He converted thousands, - including druids! - and is believed to have died on March 17th, 461.

Though he was never officially canonized, St. Patrick's name is on the List of Saints.
