Dyre avenue bound R33 (Redbird) 5 train operating in The Bronx
5 Train

The R33 train cars were in service from 1962-2003. R33's are most commonly known as Redbirds due to their deep red color. The train cars were given this color to combat graffiti in New York City.

R33 trains were finally retired after the arrival of R142 and R142A train cars.

The last R33 train in revenue service was in 2003. R33's have been sunken off the coast of Delaware, Georgia, New Jersey, Virginia and South Carolina as artificial reefs to promote marine life.
